On this day in history ..
  • 1921 - USS S 11 (SS 116) is launched.
  • 1939 - USS Sargo (SS 188) is commissioned.
  • 1943 - Commander Howard W. Gilmore, CO of USS Growler (SS 215) is mortally wounded in a battle with a Japanese gunboat. Ensign W. W. William and F3 W. F. Kelley were killed. Gilmore, knowing he cannot make the safety of the conning tower and that his ship must submerge, issued the order "Take her down". He is awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
  • 1944 - Keel is laid for the USS Sea Owl (SS 405).
  • 1945 - USS Carbonero (SS 337) is commissioned.
